Recently, I’ve noticed a surge of articles on leadership in nursing landing in my inbox. A common theme runs through them: case managers must recognize their value and actively promote it within their organizations/communities.
As I reflect on today’s current healthcare workforce, I see countless professionals doing vital work—yet many feel unseen by their employers, colleagues, and even themselves. Why is that? I believe it’s because many professionals view their contributions as simply fulfilling their duties. While that’s true, it’s equally important to feel valued and acknowledged.
As a Nurse Case Management leader, I’ve experienced recognition through my involvement with the Case Management Society of America (CMSA). Through this professional organization, I’ve contributed to the field via education, mentorship, and leadership at local, regional, and national levels. Looking back, I know this engagement made a meaningful difference—both personally and professionally—for me and those I’ve worked with.
So I pose this question to nurse case managers:
- Are you a leader?
- Are you making a difference in your organization or community?
- Are you mentoring new case managers to step up and lead?
- Are you educating people (patients, caregivers) on how to engage in the complex system?
- Are you collaborating with members of the healthcare team, payers, employers, politicians, and others to ensure a safe and equitable healthcare system that meets the needs of all those who access it?
If you answered “yes” to any of these, I encourage you to consider becoming a Case Management Fellow.
What Is the Fellowship Program?
Launched in 2021, CMSA’s Fellowship Program recognizes thought leaders in case management. Fellows actively shape the future of the profession, advance standards of practice, and embody a deep passion for case management.
Earning the FCM (Fellow in Case Management) designation reflects a high level of professional proficiency, commitment to lifelong learning, and influence in the field. Fellows serve as ambassadors, visionaries, mentors, authors, speakers, and strategic thinkers.

Just curious if CMSA has reviewed and reconsidered the requirement for applicants to have been a member of CMSA for last 5 years? You may recall you and I spoke about this last year when I had an interest to apply but was unable to meet required criteria of membership to CMSA.
