Yesterday, I received mail I had not expected. As I opened the package, I found a signed copy of a new book a fellow Patient Advocate colleague wrote with her husband, “It’s Agape Love: The Spirit of Champions.”

The book is designed to be a transformative experience that tells a story, teaches, and touches your heart. Whether used for individual enrichment, as a couple’s study, or in a group setting, this book offers valuable lessons on living a life filled with love, overcoming obstacles with grace, and positively impacting the world.

I must admit that I was not familiar with the term Agape Love. As I read, I learned that Agape Love is a Greek word describing a selfless love that seeks the welfare and betterment of others regardless of personal feelings. The book’s authors exemplify this love throughout their journey together, particularly during Earl’s life-threatening health challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I can’t wait to dive into this book and learn the story and the lessons Earl and Darlene gained from their meeting and their agape love.

Darlene, I’m so proud of you! Since you appeared on the patient advocacy scene, you have been enthusiastic and positive about your role as a patient advocate. When I heard your story about caring for your husband, I knew you would be an excellent advocate. You ‘got it’ right from the start. You jumped in, became your husband’s advocate, ensured the doctors were on top of things, and collaborated when making decisions. You fought to ensure he was well taken care of and had a voice in his care. I knew then you were the real deal. It has been fulfilling to watch how you have grown over the years into an experienced patient advocate, making a difference in the lives of many.

Thank you for writing this book and bringing your and Earls’ story to the public. It will help people learn many lessons, including the importance of having a patient advocate when entering the complex healthcare system. You pack a lot of information into this book. I hope a lot of people read it!
